Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The recent data from the Institute of Statistics give signals for
another slowdown of the Albanian economy, for the third trimester of
2011.
According to INSTAT, in the period July-September, the economy produces only 353 new jobs, the lowest figure since 2009. This has kept the unemployment level to 13.25%, almost the same as in the first trimester. The unemployment in Albania peaked in the beginning of 2010, with more than 13.83% of the total.
Since then, the unemployment figures slowed down by reaching 13.26% in the second trimester of 2011, and 13.25% in the third. The slowdown of the job market is not a good signal for the economy, which gave proofs of a strong deceleration in the second trimester of the year, when the production growth plunged in the minimal level of 0.5%.
66% unemployed for more than one year
The unemployment figures in Albania give a paradox reality. Although the official unemployment figure decreases, the number of unemployed people remains the same. The army of unemployed in Albania counts 142.000 people.
This figure seems constant, which means that the economy could produce jobs only for facing the natural increase of the working forces, while the 142.000 current unemployed are destined to remain in the same position.
The recent INSTAT study discovered that most of the unemployed in Albania, almost 66% of them, have been unemployed for more than one year.
Experts say that these individuals are endangered not only by the demotivation, but also by extreme poverty.
