Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The government approved the permit for the construction and operation of
the commercial interconnection line between Albania and Italy.
This underwater line, the legal framework of which has been under process for several years, will cross the Adriatic Sea through Vlore and export electricity to Brindisi. PM Berisha says that this is a development of great importance, since the energetic connections with the Italian market not only have a strategic significance, but are a major step in the realization of the project that will transform Albania into a small electric super-power in the region.
“Italy is one of the biggest energy markets in Europe and the world. The government is determined to encourage the underwater connections with this friend country, so that renewable energy could be exported to Italy in a near future. There are many demands. This is totally in line with our philosophy for liberalizing the electricity market in Albania”, Berisha declared.
Albania will open a tender for the public works and equipments of the Devoll cascade, an investment that mounts up to 1 billion EUR, since three hydropower plants will be constructed in this river. The government is continuing the procedures to set all mechanisms in motion for the construction of Skavica hydropower plant and the privatization of five smaller ones.
Berisha has often considered the energy field as the most strategic and a great priority for Albania’s stable development, which is expected to attract many foreign investments. Berisha has also made another move to facilitate the procedures for the foreign investors, by proposing to change the citizenship law and establishing new standards. These standards will grant Albanian citizenship to all foreigners who invest more than 100.000 EUR in our country.
“The desire to invest in Albania and to receive the Albanian citizenship is real. Many businessmen have demanded this, and it has never been denied to them, but now it is time to regulate it through law”, Berisha declared.
