Underage miners in Bulqize

23/04/2012 00:00

Most of the Bulqize families have illegal chrome gathering as the only means of survival.

The massive stone piles have been created by the forced labor of political prisoners, and now are their only source of revenues.

Most of the workers are underage children, who finish school and come here to dig for chrome. For three dollars a day, they must transport 100 kg of stones on their backs.

The mineral is bought by firms or persons who offer a price of 3 ALL per kilogram, and then sell it with 10 ALL. All of this happens in an area where death related accidents are not unknown.

The children open massive holes and work under the danger of stone avalanches, risking their lives every single day.
