Due to the geographical position, Albania is turning into a transitory country for illegal emigrants.

The UN Special Rapporteur, François Crepeau, underlined the necessity for making the preparations that should in case of a greater number of foreigners that might enter Albania for going to other European Countries.

“Albania is a transitory country, and will have always more illegal emigration, although it is still in small scales now. We must make the preparations for attending an increasing number of emigrants that come to Albania. We must be prepared for more asylum demands and bigger waves of refugees”, Crepeau declared.

At least 80% of the Albanians that have returned from Greece have not respected the rules and have violated all legal procedures set by the Greek authorities.

“Based on the testimonies, 80% of the Albanians who have returned from Greece, have not respected the laws of the agreement between Albania and the other EU countries”, Crepeau declared.

One third of the Albanian population lives mainly in Greece and Italy. A good part of the Albanian citizens do not have regular status, what makes the registration of their children even more difficult.

“Every baby should be registered at the civil registrar soon after the birth, have a name and a nationality. It is unacceptable that children are born without nationality in the Europe of these days. Albania and the hosting countries must take urgent measures for this situation”, declared Crepeau.

In this report was also underlined the fact that the children of the Albanian emigrants have little access to Albanian language courses, and also the severe sentences that foreign courts give for Albanian emigrants, since they’re represented by non-professional lawyers.
