Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The UN Security Council discussed about Kosovo behind closed doors for
several hours. The Russian Ambassador in the UN, Vitali Churkin showed
signs of impatience when the Kosovo Foreign Minister, Enver Hoxhaj, was
giving a press conference, around 03:00.
“You have no right to stand there and speak without the UNMIK presence”, the Russian Ambassador told the Foreign Minsiter, Hoxhaj.
“I don’t think sot”, Hoxhaj replied and continued to answer the questions.
After the conference, Hoxhaj approached the Russian ambassador, shook hands and smiled about what happened some minutes ago. The Russian Ambassador in The UN declared that he respects Prishtina representatives and he always listens to them carefully, but according to him, they cannot speak without the UNMIK presence. Then Churkin got nervous by the journalists’ questions about his interference, and declared: “I only gave him a friendly advice, I didn’t punch him”.
During this closed door meeting, the Foreign Minister of Kosovo, Enver Hoxhaj is quoted of having said that taking the control of the border checkpoints in north is not a unilateral act, and that most of the Security Council members agree with this.
The Security Council did not approve the proposition of Russia for releasing a declaration that would ask Kosovo Albanians and Serbians to avoid violence and solve the situation through dialogue. After the session, the UN General Secretary, Ban Ki Mun expressed his concern for the tensions raised in North. He appealed all parties to restrain themselves from unilateral actions that could escalate tensions in the area.
