Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future Two women died today in Devoll. Mirela and Elena Zylfi, 35 and 29 years
old, both mothers of five children, were trying to cross the river on
the back of a truck, due to the absence of a bridge.
There were 20 persons in total on the truck, heading to a funeral on the other side of the river. The heavy river flow has toppled the truck and all the people fell into the water.
Only 18 of them survived, while the two women suffered head traumas due to the fall and then drowned in the water.
The survivors found the bodies of the two young mothers. Witnesses say that this was a pre-announced tragedy, since the same situation had been created a few days ago, even with children, who were saved thanks to the quick reaction of the residents.
Police arrested Gezim Zyfi, owner of the truck. Crossing the river on a truck is a ritual for the villagers, even to send their kids to school.
There are several videos on the internet, showing the children of this area putting their life in danger to return from school.
The construction of the bridge costs only 10 million ALL, but the funds were never found and took the life of the young mothers, putting the others in danger each day.
