Politics is often seen as a jungle where the toughest are able to stay in power, even
after the attacks and traps planned in those violent lobbies. Women
are not an exception, as we saw recently with Ermira Mehmeti, MP
of the BDI, one of the two most protagonist female Albanian politicians
in Macedonia.

A phone surveillance tape was published one month ago, allegedly recording a conversation between her and a BDI high-level official, the Deputy Prime Minister of Macedonia, Musa Xhaferi. The Macedonian authorities have not given an answer yet about the authenticity of the material.

Mehmeti, who has been an MP for the last eight years, tells her truth for Top Channel’s show, “Exclusive”.

“I have carried out private tests on the surveillance recordings and it turned out to be a montage. My voice has been attached to other conversations. There is an investigation undergoing at the Special Prosecution, the most independent investigation institution in Macedonia. I don’t want to reveal further details because I would be damaging the investigation. This is a very dangerous conspiracy from those who want to damage the Albanian politicians in Macedona, especially an Albanian female politician. In this situation that we have with the security system, we can only expect conspiracies. Whatever we say in our defense, it does not fulfill the public’s expectations. This was a very hard hit. The purpose was to show that an Albanian woman cannot make it in the Macedonian politics without having affairs with powerful males. I think this is a scenario that has been widely used in the former Yugoslavia, when public figures used to be discredited”, the MP says.

She adds that the purpose was to attack her family. “My family has always been on my side. The best thing is that we came out even stronger, more united, for the disappointment of those who wanted to hurt us”.

“I have been threatened three times already, unfortunately, even by Albanians. This shows that crime goes beyond ethnicity. It is about people who have justice problems. I want to stop this story that did hurt me, but didn’t ruin me. I learned that it is my duty to rise up and continue my life and my political activity. I owe it to my voters and to my family”, Ermira Mehmeti declared.
