The government approved in principle the Transadriatic Pipeline TAP
agreement. The decision was made public by the Prime Minister, who
considered it a historical decision for Albania and the region. Berisha was very enthusiastic about this, saying that besides reinforcing the political position of the countries involved, the project will bring 2 billion USD of investments in Albania.

Berisha has been lobbing with Azerbaijan for this project, because the other options exclude Albania from the plan. He was very condident that the plan that includes Albania will win next year, just before the next elections.

“Today we approved the mutual agreement between Albania, Italy and Greece for the biggest project of these 20 years, if not of the century. The Trans-Balkan pipeline will bring the Caspian sea gas through Turkey, Greece, Albania and Italy to the Western Europe”, Berisha declared in the government meeting. Berisha expressed his optimism that this project will change the life of the Albanian people and will give the country not just a transitory role.

Also next year will start the construction of the Devoll hydropower plant, with a giant investment from the international electricity giants “Statkraft” and “EVN”. Berisha declared that they will build the biggest hydropower plant in all Europe, which will have 50 kilometers of tunnels.

As for Albania’s gas advantages, Berisha added:

“Albania’s big advantages are that it will not have just a transitory role. Our country has great natural gas deposits. Albania has all possibilities to become a powerful gas distribution center to the Apennine Peninsula and Northern Balkan. Albania has the chance to use the pipeline for all areas and guarantee low cost heat and cooking for its citizens. Albania has all chances to build gas thermo-centrals and become a great electric energy exporter”, Berisha declared, promising that they will make everything possible to end this project by the end of 2017.
