Using the zebra crossing is a real challenge for the citizens of
Albania. Although it should have been a very natural action, for many
Albanians it has turned into a synonym of fear, excessive care and an
effort to analyze the face of the driver, whether he will stop or not.
The capital which has gathered almost one third of the population often has tragedies. 290 deaths were registered last year in Albania due to car accidents, and 98 of them were pedestrians.
Police officers say that they need raising awareness among drivers. “The preliminary measures taken by the traffic police is preventing accidents, advising drivers and even using fines. But these are not enough. We need awareness campaigns and the media should work to educate citizens”, declared Ervin Dervishi, Head of Tirana’s Urban Traffic.
“Respect the living” is a message of awareness that is supported by the Interior Ministry, and to illustrate this motto they organized a procession, for which everyone stopped without hesitation.
“What we did is called guerrilla advertising. We catch the public unprepared. We realized this simulation to give a clear message to drivers and pedestrians. Everyone sees the problems with the traffic and everyone wants to feel safe. We hope that this initiative will help raising awareness and make drivers more careful for the safety of pedestrians”, declared Ivica Spasovski, creative director of McCann Tirana.
“The idea was to follow the tradition and give a message to respect the living, to stop for everybody”, declared Flonja Gjollma, artistic director of “McCann Tirana”.
The campaign doesn’t affect only drivers, but it aims to avoid confusion that make pedestrians not respect their crossing places, but think that every space is appropriate for crossing.
