The Albanian President, Bamir Topi responded to the declarations of the
Serbian President, Boris Tadic, for Kosovo and its cultural heritage in
the ninth UNESCO summit that is being held in the Roman city of
Viminacium, near Pozharevc.

Bamir Topi declared that culture is an instrument for approaching the two peoples, and the President of Kosovo, Atifte Jahjaga should have been present in this meeting where are gathered all Presidents of Southeastern Europe.

“Kosovo, with its old and new culture, with its modern art and its famous voices will strengthen the political-cultural relations with other countries in the region, especially with the neighbors. For this we need good will from all directions, because reconciliation is very possible. The peoples cannot and must not live with tensions and complexes that derive from the past, but in peace and harmony. The language of art and its plurality are irreplaceable means of spiritual communication”, Topi declared.

After the solemn welcomes, the meeting continued with the discussion session. The Serbian President gave the opening speech, declaring that one of most important issues for Serbia is the status of cultural and spiritual inheritance in Kosovo.

“These saint objects present only the essence of the Serbian identity. Physically, these objects are threatened by extremists. There are more than 150 churches and monasteries, 35 of which were burned during March 2004. We have testified the political attempts of Prishtina to ‘kosovarize’ these parts of the Serbian identity. But those must remain to the Serbian inheritance”, Tadic declared.

During their stay in the ancient town, the Presidents visited different archeological sites and continued the afternoon session, after which they will give a joint press release.

The Albanian President, Bamir Topi will meet the Serbian and Macedonian presidents, and the General Director of UNESCO.
