The Albanian President, Bamir Topi, declared that the 100th year of
Independence has one challenge for Albania: the EU candidate status.

President addressed to the foreign diplomats accredited to Tirana by saying that the country needs to continue the reforms. He said that the democracy would breathe better with a political rotation. But this confirmation takes a special meaning with the President’s ambition to return to politics.

“I have had the honor to serve to my country for the last five years, as Head of the State. In this year, Albania will have new Presidential elections and I confirm once again that I have often encouraged and supported the democratic rotation for the institutions, which gives new breathing to the democracy, increases the public trust towards the institutions and it remains a necessity for countries like Albania, which come from totalitarian systems that have a long and difficult transition”, Topi declared.

According to the Swiss ambassador, which spoke on behalf of other diplomats, the challenge for Albania’s EU integration requires the contribution of everyone.

“This challenging objective needs its time and also constant efforts for succeeding. Most of all, it requires a national consensus, strong dedication and joint efforts by the entire political class, the government, the opposition and all economic and social actors – the entire Albanian society”, declared Ambassador Yvana Enzler.

This was the traditional meeting of the President with the foreign diplomats in Tirana, for the New Year.
