Tomori Mountain National Park will be extended in order to remove quarries

The Albanian government is consulting a draft law which would extend the Tomor Mountain National Park boundaries, in order to stop excavations from quarries that are operating around it.

The law that has been proposed by the Ministry of Environment would extend the existing surface with 1383 hectares, taking under protection even the area that is being exploited by private companies.

However, the companies filed a complaint at court and the law was rejected. The Court ruled that the government had not followed the necessary legal procedures for implementing the decision in question. More specifically, the government had not organized a public consultation, which made the companies restart their activities.

The government is now starting the procedures once again, following every detail. Within 30 days, the decision will be at the Council of Ministers, after the consultations, and the companies will no longer be allowed to operate in the area.
