Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future On 17 November 1944, Tirana was liberated from the German Nazi forces.
Today, on the celebration of this important day, the politicians were
divided.
The Mayor of Tirana and the Democratic Party leaders chose the Martyrs’ Cemetery and declared that this anniversary should serve to unite, rather than dividing the Albanians.
“In this 100th anniversary of independence, as Mayor of Tirana, I honour the sacrifice of those who fell for the liberation of the Albanian capital. It should serve as an inspiration for unification, not for division. Today, when most of the dreams for a developed and democratic Albania have been realized, our duty is to not repeat the mistakes of the past, but to get united and give to our country and people what it deserves”, Basha declared.
On the other hand, the Socialist Party councillors and hundreds of citizens gathered at the Unknown Soldier and honoured the martyrs of Albania. They appealed the government to not try and change the history and its facts.
The military operation for the liberation of Tirana started in October and continued until 17 November 1944. After 20 days of war, the partisan forces lost 220 soldiers, while the Germans lost 2000 men, 500 of whom were captured.
