Tirana Road Ring, no license for environment

Environmentalists intensified debates with Environment Ministry about
the implementation of the Tirana Outer Ring Road Project, which passes
through the Botanical Garden. While the trees of the Botanical Garden are
currently being cut, environmentalists accused the construction companies of not
having environmental license.

“No environmental license should be given for that area. This is no technical opinion, but I think that this entire project must be reviewed, because the value of the Botanical Garden is much greater”, says the environmentalist Lavdosh Feruni.

Minister of Environment, Fatmir Mediu, declared that his ministry is reviewing the documentations, and if the subjects are not licensed, the works will be interrupted.

“Whoever they might be, they don’t have the authority to act without a license. If there is no environmental license, there will be sanctions, same as for any other activity”, declared Minister Mediu.

The construction of the Tirana Outer Road Ring has spurred controversy between government and opposition, because this project affects a considerable part of the Botanical Garden. Minimally, the environmental license obliges construction companies to plant somewhere else the trees that will be cut or damaged during the construction of the road.
