The decision to replace city centre parks with high rise constructions
has alarmed environmentalists, who say that Tirana already has the most
polluted air in Europe.
Environmentalists say that the only solution to this situation is creating new green spaces and not destroying the existing parks, as the new Regulatory Plan predicts.
“Our city is like a factory with increased industrial activity and vehicles. When you make a regulation plan, you undertake to resolve these problems. We welcome a plan that would resolve these problems and make our city healthier. Some indicators show that the air pollution has increased with six times, and few air components are within the World Health Organization norms”, declared environmentalist Xhemal Mato.
Statistics show that there are 500 deaths each year caused only by the air pollution.
“We are considered a dangerous area as regards statistics. Longevity has decreased with two years and air pollution is causing 500 deaths each year. The only thing that can make it better, is increasing green spaces”, Mato declared.
Experts and environmentalists demand that the Tirana Regulation Plan should be stopped, because it foresees the destruction of the existing parks and construction of high rise buildings in the centre.
