Tirana Municipality will not withdraw from new taxes

The Municipality of Tirana say they will not change the new tax package, which they see as well-studied and reasonable.

“This is not for the municipality to get money from citizens, but for the city to have investments from everyone’s contribution. Every fee is just and with a good profit-tax ratio”, said the Vice Mayor of Tirana, Arbjan Mazniku.

The mostly opposed measure is the 10-fold raise of the public space fee. But the Municipality says only 10% of the businesses are affected and it serves to the public.

Another tax is the one on education, which replaces the previous “Green Tax” and according to Mazniku it is the same, not an added tax.

The Municipality’s budget has increased with 50 million USD, but Mazniku said it is due to better administration, not higher taxes.

“We have 40.000 busineses, 29.000 of which are small businesses with zero tax”, Mazniku asid.

Several businesses protested in front of the Municipality and asked them to withdraw the new package that raises the tax.
