Tirana Mayor on “Top Story”: “Sharra’s tragedy is nothing like Gerdec”

The Municipality of Tirana attracts public attention and spurs political
debates, also for the fact that in two cases, it has served as a very
important trampoline for its mayors, who have grown in much higher
posts.

Erion Veliaj won last year and launched his initiative “Tirana at work”, with a new city plan that has been through many debates. Last week, the death of a teenager at the Sharra landfill created concerns among the public opinion and was even mentioned in Parliament.

On Top Channel’s “Top Story”, hosted by Sokol Balla, Veliaj was confronted by analysts Mustafa Nano, Eduard Zaloshnja and Arjan Vasjari.

PM Berisha compared the death of the 17-year-old boy, who lost his life working at the landfill, with the Gerdec tragedy which caused in 2008 25 victims, many of them young boys who lost their lives after an accident at the work site, where they were dismantling heavy ammunition.

Berisha said that both cases are state crimes, but responsible is the Tirana Municipality about this? Did they have information about the presence of children?

“Different from Gerdec, I found the Sharra landfill already there, operating since the ‘70s and the ’80s. It should have been closed in 2011, but Berisha was too busy trying to steal the Municipality of Tirana, rather than doing proper work. Tirana doesn’t have a new landfill, and this is why I was there last November, when recycling businessmen protested at the Municipality of Tirana, and told them that collecting recyclable materials should be done through an agreement with the Municipality, not illegally, because every waste that is removed from Sharra, can only do good”, Veliaj declared.

Veliaj said the owner of the company is on the run by the police after the death of the boy, and that he will wait for the investigations to be complete before issuing any declaration.

Veliaj adds that the Municipality needs to reduce the quantity of wastes going to Sharra, and for this reason they have brought recycling companies into an agreement, for which the Municipality does not pay anything. If the company in question has violated the Labor Code, Veliaj said they need to be held responsible.
