Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Minister of Transports, Sokol Olldashi, inspected the Tirana-Elbasan
tunnel construction site and declared that 66% of the tunnel is already
opened.
Accompanied by the Minister of Defense, Arben Imami, and other MPs, Olldashi announced that the tunnel will see the light in the first weeks of May.
“The works are continuing in parallel at the other parts of the road. There are no problems with the funds and expropriations”, Olldashi declared.
The 4.3 kilometers long tunnel will avoid the existing Qafe Kerraba road, which was initially built during the First World War by the Austro Hungarian army. The New highway will be 30 kilometers long, from 54 that the current one is, and vehicles will be allowed to drive up to 120 kmhour.
The cost of the entire project is expected to mount to around 400 million USD. The Albanian government has signed agreements of 300 million USD with some Arab investors, with a 5% annual interest rate. Only the interests of these loans will cost to the Albanian tax payers around 15 million USD annually.
