Three Albanian citizens, 33, 56 and 23, were saved by coast guards after four days of research in the Otranto Channel.
They were found 70 miles from the Italian coasts, detected by a helicopter that was patrolling the area. The local authorities say that the boat they had just bought had a problem in their only motor and was insured.
The sea conditions were good from the San Foca port, but they would deteriorate within a few hours, according to forecasts. The Italian authorities are investigating the reasons of this travel and are questioning the three people. They were initially cured in hospital after being dehydrated for four difficult days at sea.
The coast guards started searching after the Albanian side rang the alarm for their disappearance.
