More than 400 Middle Eastern refugees crossed the Tabanoc border checkpoint this Tuesday between Macedonia and Serbia. The total number in one day is four times higher and the 4-hour train trip is no easy ride.
Refugees say they travel from Serbia to Germany where they usually meet their families, since ISIS has taken control of their cities. But they complain about the conditions of this train. Human rights organizations who offer food and water describe painful scenes of people who come in even larger groups. They say there are plenty of pregnant women and people with disabilities among them who cannot receive help.
After receiving water and food from the “Vllaznia” association and others, the refugees cross the border illegally and they need to walk for five kilometers on foot before they reach the Presheva camp. More than 2000 come each day and use Macedonia as transitory until they go to more developed EU countries.
Many say they are rushing before Hungarian authorities complete the border fence, built especially to stop their illegal trips.
