The children of big cities who live in poor families feel the inequality gap more than others.
The Albanian capital has hundreds of children that don’t go to school, don’t live in decent residences and do not access social services.
The Mayor of Tirana, Lulzim Basha, promised during a meeting with the children that the Municipality will take a series of measures for improving their life.
“We have been planning a series of measures for helping the children in need. Our plan starts with the identification of those who go to school and who not, in order to provide school text books, and offer our services even after the school hours for those who need extra lessons or others who want to be involved in cultural or sportive activities”, Basha declared.
The UNICEF Ambassador, Detlefit Palm, asked the identification of inequality among children who live in urban areas, in order to improve the service to them.
“Societies with inequalities create their own problems, but the children are equal and should enjoy all basic rights, regardless of how rich their parents are. When we think about poverty, the first thing that goes through our minds is the children who live in rural areas. But today there is an increasing number of children who live in poor urban areas, who are the mostly endangered group”, Palm declared.
The UNICEF Ambassador handed to the Tirana Municipality the report “Children in the urban world 2012”, and asked the government to put the children in the heart of urban planning, and expand and improve the services for everyone.
