Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future Their children are sick, with high temperature and vomiting. Their water
is polluted and they have no medicine. This is the situation of some
families that have been sheltered at a former military building in the
Tirana suburbs.
But the bad conditions are not enough. The Roma children that live in these buildings are often threatened by the residents who claim ownership of the land. For this reason, the Roma are guarded by the police for the entire time.
The residents of this community say that they live in fear, that the women and children are gathered in a room by night, while the men stay outside, keeping guard.
Disappointed from the many promises, they demand safety, work and better conditions for their children. The Ministry of Work declared a few months ago that these buildings will be reconstructed completely, before the Roma families would enter, when they were protesting at the Ombudsman. Their solution was this premise where there is no running water or electricity.
The Ministry of Labor exlpains that a meeting will be held this Tuesday will foreign donators for improving the situation of the Roma that live at the military division.
