Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future
Students and teachers all over the country complain each winter for the
lack of the heating systems in schools, and that even in those rare
cases when they are installed, they do not actually work.
The Education Ministry appealed school directors throughout Albania to take measures for the cold temperatures of January and February, and cancel lessons when roads are blocked, in order to protect the children’s health.
But the children’s health is not endangered only by icy roads, but also by the cold classrooms. This problem was raised in the Korce schools, where heating with lumber apparently has not been sufficient.
The schools of Pirg and Libonik, in Korce, have interrupted lessons due to the lack of heat. The parents complain that the children return home early, since they cannot stay in the cold classrooms.
The children of the Pirg commune have their school under construction, and they are obliged to walk farther among the snow, at schools of other nearby villages.
The Korce Education Directory declared that the heating in schools is a responsibility of the local government, such as the Municipality and Communes, but in these conditions, the children of Korce continue a formal teaching process, without actually having normal classes.
