64 children are learning at the day care center for children with autism in Gjirokastra, but a larger number of children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, or other psychological disorders and depression, are not receiving treatment for lack of facilities, programs, therapists and finances.
Center manager Maralba Bime says she looks forward to moving to a new larger facility that is now being rehabilitated which will be the new center.
She hopes the long-awaited investment will pave the way for some new programs and will allow treatment for more people in the future.
At the current center, 64 children and 10 staff members use a single toilet and sometimes therapists have to share a class to treat two children at once.
The County Council confirmed that the new therapeutic center is expected to be ready in the spring following an investment that will adapt the former Art School dormitory facilities, while it will depend on the Ministry of Health whether there will be additional staff for the treatment of children traveling to Gjirokastra from all over the region.
