The ancient city of Durres is also known as the city of mosaics.
Rich of historic and cultural values, the mosaics would increase tourism profits for Albania’s biggest coastal towns, but many of the mosaics are not accessible to visitors.
The most visited one remains the mural mosaic near the Ancient Amphitheater.
The presence of the mosaic close to a pagan object, means that it was built during early medieval times for Christian purposes.
Another famous mosaic is the “Beauty of Durres”, which is being displayed at the Tirana National Museum of History.
Many other mosaics have been discovered before the ‘90s, but they are not accessible.
Other mosaics are situated beneath private residential buildings, others are covered and preserved underground by archaeologists, such as the mosaic with a hypo-camp, the Orpheus Mosaic, the Meandri Mosaic, and the Arapaj Basilica Mosaic.
The Mehill mosaic, built during the ruling of Emperor Justinian 1st, is covered by archeologists but it still attracts many visitors in Arapaj.
The road to the VI century basilica is not easy. The old asphalt is ruined and there are no road signs.
