The President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, underlined for Der Standard that his proposition for issuing Albanian passports to Kosovo citizens is in full accordance with the law, as he tried to dismiss once again concerns about Greater Albania.
“The European Commission has been unfair with Kosovo. This is why its citizens have lost trust that there will be a positive agenda for the country. The isolation that has been done to Kosovo citizens is the reason why there is the need for Albanian citizenship. It is up to Kosovo citizens to decide if they want dual citizenships or not”, Thaci declared.
“But if the European Commission continues with this isolation, it should be no surprise for something like that to happen. Prishtina has fulfilled 94 of 95 criteria for the visa liberalization. We have been loyal, but it wasn’t paid back by the Commission, which focused only on Serbia and is concerned only about them, not about other Western Balkan countries”, Thaci argued.
When asked if he had discussed this proposition with the President of Albania, Edi Rama, Thaci said that his message was clear to everyone. The fact that Kosovo Albanians can receive Albanian passports pushes Der Standar to the voting right issue, which would raise concerns about Greater Albania. Thaci dismissed this as out of place, and said that his initiative is only related to the visa free movement.
As for the dialogue with Serbia, Thaci says there is no other alternative: “We want to finish it with a historic final agreement that will normalize the reconciliation process”, the Kosovo President declared.
