The Tepelena Castle, one of the main late medieval monuments in our
country, which is related with the Ali Pasha Tepelena period, is
threatened by collapse.

The three cracks in the walls have expanded since the latest appeal that was made in July 2012. After this appeal, the Ministry of Culture inspected the situation.

After the inspection, the specialists reported that there was a 4 meters long crack, 20-30 cm wide, which now have doubled. The Mayor of Tepelena, Termet Peci, says that it is necessary to make an urgent intervention, not only to save the castle, but also to avoid any danger for the people’s lives.

The funds given for cleaning the castle walls have made the cracks even more visible. The monument has serious damages in its mural structure, the interior premises and the degradation of the terrain. The specialists say that the castle needs a long-term functionality plan that could turn it into a tourist monument.
