Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future A former high rank official of the Albanian Ministry of Defense, who
served in the army from 1948 to 1968, filed a suit at the Court of
Tirana, in which he asks the repeal of a Defense Ministry decision that
was taken on 7 October 1968, when the Ministry of Defense was led by
Beqir Balluku.
This decision has suspended the military officer Xhemal Didi for political reasons, and his working years have been devaluated.
Didi was suspended from the Albanian Armed Forces and joined the numbers of the politically persecuted people, for being the nephew of the former General Prosecutor of Albania, Bedri Spahiu. One of the most important figures of the communist regime killing system, Spahiu asked the death punishment for dozens of intellectuals in 1945, in the trial of MPs in 1947, with Koci Xoxe as his collaborator, and then sentenced to death even Koci Xoxe.
Regretting this masquerade, Spahiu retired some years later and became a victim of the regime, staying in prisons for 35 years. After he was arrested in 1957, his relatives became victims of the persecution mechanism.
His nephew, Xhemal Didi, was one of them. He was suspended from the army for being the nephew of Bedri Spahiu, and this period of time has not been recognized as working experience.
This special request will be reviewed by judge Artur Gaxhi.
