Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future Northeastern areas of the country and informal neighborhoods near Tirana
and other cities have a high number of malnourished children.
The recent Public Health Institution data show that one in five children is overweight and one in ten children is under the normal average height. Experts think that the difficult economic situation of the families and the lack of information to a healthy food are the main factors of this situation.
“One in 10 children from one to five years old are malnourished from the weight point of view, and less than one in five are malnourished from the height point of view”, declared Alban Ylli, specialist at the National Health Institution.
The NHI has studied children from 0 to 5 years of age throughout the country, which resulted that Albania is still among the countries with high number of malnourished children. Underweight children are often affected by acute diarrheas and other respiratory infective diseases that bring further health problems.
