The strike of the former political prisoners has entered its 18th day,
while during a communication with the media, the strikers asked for
Gjergj Ndreca to be cured in a more specialized clinic, and Perikli
Shqevi to be released from prison as soon as possible.

Besides the two new requests, they also repeated that of the dialogue with the government and an immediate solution of their requests.

“The state must cure Gjergj Ndreca in a foreign specialized clinic for a quick recovery. We are also dealing with the communist style arrest of striker Perikli Shqevi, who today is again a political prisoner in this pseudo-democracy. It was Shqevi’s turn to get burned and others would follow him. We have a list with the persons that have decided to sacrifice themselves in the most extreme ways, in order to answer to the silence of this government”, declared Skender Tufa, chairman of the former Political Prisoners Associations.

The Helsinki Committee inspected the cell at the Police District nr.1, where Shqevi is being held. After the inspection, it resulted that Shqevi had received normal treatments by the police authority.

Sequi: Law must be implemented

The head of the European Embassy to Tirana, Ettore Sequi, visited Gjergj Ndreca this Tuesday, the striker that tried to sacrifice himself in protest against the government’s failure to pay their compensation for the years passed in prison.

“I explained to Gjergj Ndreca the humane sympathy of all my colleagues from Brussels. We believe that all matters related with the compensation of the former persecuted people must be treated in full accordance with the legislation. We also need dialogue between the parties that are involved in this process”, Sequi declared.

Arvizu visits strikers: Government must listen

The hunger strikers were visited by the US Ambassador to Tirana, Alexander Arvizu.

After expressing the condolences for Gjergj Ndreca’s act, the US main diplomat in Tirana declared that he asked the Albanian government to build communication bridges with the strikers and appealed them to stay away from extreme acts, since they are not the right solution.

“I know that you are protesting and you would want your voice to be heard. But self sacrification is not the right path for resolving this issue. I and the US government would not like to intervene, but I asked the Albanian government to find a way to build communication bridges with you. It is your right to get heard, and this is what I asked the government for”, the US Ambassador declared.
