The State Police said today that it has protected the judge of the Court of First Instance in Tirana, Arnisa Kelliçi, after a threatening letter, which is being analyzed by officials.

“Today, 20.01.2024, I received a threatening letter, which, as far as I can decipher, contains threats to me, my children and my family. I cannot at any time verify the authenticity of this letter, but for any eventuality, I request a special protection, as much as you deem necessary” – it is said in the letter of the judge to the authorities.

In recent months, the number of special bodyguards that will protect prosecutors and judges who are threatened by crime or corrupt officials has been doubled. From 49 forces, the new structure of the Special Protection Unit has turned into a super unit with 103 people. The armored unit, otherwise known as RES, was proposed by the general director of the Police Muhamet Rrumbullaku and signed by the Minister of the Interior Taulant Balla.

The Special Protection Unit has its own budget and provides for another special operational unit structure. Seven prosecutors and judges are currently in special protection due to threats and high profile cases under investigation.
