Special customs for waste import

After many debates and oppositions by the civil society for the law that
allows waste import in Albania, the Minister of Environment, Fatmir
Mediu, declared that they should reinforce the custom inspection and
require that only some of them allow the import of wastes, only the ones
that should be equipped with all inspection certificates.

“We might not have the capacities in all Albanian customs, but we might make the import only from some specific customs. We shouldn’t think about the cost when requiring all necessary inspections. Besides the inspection capacities, we must be active in the moment when this import process will start, because we are not a society without problems of different kinds”, Mediu declared.

The Minister of Environment also declared that since 2010, they have allowed only one waste import, the scrap metals. Referring to the public debate, the Minister declared that he is open to hear the expert suggestions for the wastes that should not be imported, as the only way for finding the necessary solutions.

“If we see any weakness in any link of these elements, we will build stricter inspection policies or will abrogate, if we will not be able to verify what is necessary. We guarantee that there will be no negative impacts in the environment and people’s health. If all of them are to be abrogated, let’s abrogate them, but not without trying them”, Mediu declared.

The Minister of Environment gave these declarations during a meeting with experts from the civil society and representatives from the EU, who have supported the reinforcement of the capacities through the Selea project and 4 million EUR, for the planning of the laws and the implementation of the national legislation for the environment.
