The EU delegation in Albania has expressed its surprise and deep concern
regarding the Deputy Minister of Defense public declaration and also
leader of the Legality Movement Party, Ekrem Spahiu, saying that the
state should beat gay people with batons.

The European Union condemns every discriminating rhetoric and invitation to violence and hate.

“Albania has ratified the European Convention of the Human Rights, and has approved the Protection Against Discrimination Law. War against discrimination, including the discrimination of LGBT persons, is one of the 12 key priorities of the 2010 Opinion. Albania is engaged to implement the Action Plan on these 12 key priorities. Public declarations like that of Mr. Spahiu fall against the implementation of the anti-discrimination policies that are included in the 23rd chapter of the basic legal rights, part of the EU legislation. The EU delegation in Albania appeals the Albanian authorities to make sure that such behaviors will not be repeated”, the reaction says.
