SP: Yes to referendum for four issues

The Socialist Party declared that yesterday’s Parliamentary session has
failed, and that there were provocations and impositions from the Prime
Minister.

“The long session was provoked by the Prime Minister in a partial, unjust and abusive way. We discussed in a harsh debate for an issue that did not have two different stances, but two different sides. The Socialists chose to respect the Constitution, and debated with calmness and maturity, with public accusations based on concrete evidence, arguments and a logic that has one only goal: a common reflection in function of the cooperation and consensus climate. The other party, the Prime Minister and his government, who had chosen the force, imposition, ultimatum and emotive political reaction without any argument but only slander, had the only goal to defame and offend the political adversary. Berisha’s proof of force failed yesterday, together with the perverse purpose that does service only to his personal political and electoral interests”, declared the Socialist MP, Fatmir Xhafaj.

Xhafaj said that the Socialists will support the referendum’s proposition if it will treat four issues: Immunity, justice reform, waste management issue and the stopping of the maritime agreement with Greece, which damages the Albanian border.

According to him there is only one path for the Constitutional amends, which is made clear by law 177 of the Constitution, which says that the referendum can start with two thirds of the Albanian Parliament votes.

“We don’t want to make a referendum about an issue that is not for referendum, such as the immunity, because we have clearly stated that we will vote the immunity and there is no turning back. On September, with new amends and after the discussions will be over, with a joint text that will enable the Parliament to hold a plenary session for reviewing the Constitutional amends. But of the Prime Minister insists on this, we are ready to give the two thirds and we have our interest to do so, so that the Albanian public can judge about the immunity and all our propositions for justice, the waste management and the issue of the agreement that damages the Albanian maritime borders”, Xhafaj declared.
