SP leader, letter to Prosecutor

The opposition leader, Edi Rama, sent a letter to the General
Prosecutor, Ina Rama, in which he considers the latest developments
about the January 21st investigations as a determining moment for the
fate of the Albanian democracy. He emphasized that the prosecution’s
role is decisive, and a complete impartial investigation of the January
21st tragedy is a historical necessity.

After greeting the Prosecution’s work and the support of the USA, as a guarantee for the January 21st investigation, Rama guaranteed on behalf of the Socialist Party that they will support this investigation without reserves.

Rama publicly asked the Prosecutor to interrogate him as SP leader, and as the coordinator of the January 21st demonstrations.

Edi Rama’s letter starts by underlining the readiness to not create any obstacles for the investigation of the three Socialist MPs.

“Your request for including three Socialist MPs in the investigation has been accepted without hesitation. I guarantee that we will give our vote in Parliament, so that their immunity will not be an obstacle for the exigencies of an impartial investigation. We will do the same if the investigation will demand other MPs to be investigated”, Rama declared.

Through this letter, Rama asks the General Prosecutor:

“I see it necessary to make a question and ask an explanation, as leader of the Socialist Party and organizer of the January 21st demonstration: why the General Prosecution has not summoned me in person as SP leader and coordinator of the demonstration. The three MPs that you summoned have not done more or less than their colleagues, or even than me. I am convinced that my testimony would serve for your investigation not less than theirs. I am looking forward to be summoned and contribute to this very important investigation of the Albanian justice, and for Albania, in its difficult road towards the rule of law”.

“I want to believe that you will seriously value my will for helping with the investigation, and that you will not hesitate to list me in the ranks of the people that are being investigated. I have no immunity and I am no different from the three MPs or anyone else who has been part of the January 21st demonstration”, Rama declared.

“Why not Berisha and Basha?! They ordered the killings”

Rama also raises his personal concern and that of the opposition, for why the PM Sali Berisha and the former Interior Minister, Lulzim Basha, are not under investigation.

“Why the Prime Minister and the former Interior Minister, as the two highest links of the National Guard command chain, and as direct responsible for the functionality of the National Guard that killed four people on January 21st, have not been taken under investigation. This was impossible for us to understand, but by what I have noticed from the Albanian public opinion, they are also concerned why the investigation is being conducted only on three opposition MPs. Regardless their full readiness, they cannot fulfill the need for a complete investigation of the entire political spectrum, which cannot be divided, and the investigation cannot be partially”, Rama declared.

The opposition leader reminded General Prosecutor Ina Rama of the shocking testimony of the late Hekuran Deda’s brother, who publicly accused PM Berisha of making a scandalous offer to the Deda family.

“I believe that this testimony makes it indispensable for Berisha to be investigated together with the mediator that he sent to the Deda Family, who offered the photo of the killer in exchange of welcoming Berisha in their home. Albania needs to know the truth and only the truth, and the international friends are without doubt of the same opinion. The truth of January 21st is not simply the truth of a tragic event, but the laying of a foundation for the democratization process of our country, and for guaranteeing equality in front of the law for the decades to come”, Rama underlined.

Rama concludes his letter by inviting the General Prosecution for an all-inclusive and impartial investigation, regardless the propaganda that the ruling party has launched against the prosecution.
