SP: Government to lower taxes

The Socialist Party will officially ask the government to remove taxes for some basic food products and to cut to half the
taxes of others. The initiative was made public by the MP Mimi Kodheli.

“In the conditions of a severe economic crisis and the catastrophic decrease of the buying power, the removal of the VAT tax for bread, milk, eggs, medicine and the dimidiation of other basic food taxes are the only way for making lighter the monthly burden of the Albanian families that live by state administration wages and economic assistance rather than corruption”. Kodheli declared.

Albania is one of the countries with the highest taxes on food production. The VAT is at fixed at 20%, while in EU countries, the VAT for food goes from 0 to 10 %. The opposition says that this is unacceptable.

“The specific weight of the consumers’ taxes – VAT and the excise – on the basic food products today is 28%. We promised this in the Pact with the Citizen since May. We have won the elections even for these promises, and we will fight in the Parliament for achieving this important relief for the Albanian families, without waiting to come at power. What remains to be seen is how the ‘royal court’ of the government will act, the government that in one single day robbed from the national wealth as much as it is needed for compensating these budget shortfalls”, Kodheli declared.

Last year, Albania collected 175 million USD of revenues by the VAT only from imported food products, a bill that is paid by all citizens.
