Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Socialist Party rang alarm bells at a meeting with foreign diplomats
in Tirana, saying that the elections are threatened by unilateral
decisions of institutions.
The Secretary for Electoral Matters at the Socialist Party, Damian Gjiknuri, met with the representatives of the EU, US and OSCE embassies in Tirana, warning them of the illegal decision, as he considered it, taken by the Central Election Commission for the distribution of parliamentary seats per districts.
“We cannot enter an electoral race with mandates that do not equally represent all citizens. This is a matter that deserves attention and cannot be overlooked. CEZ and the Parliament cannot use the mandates of 2009 for the new mandates of 2013.This is very dangerous, and the legal violations would start before the elections even begin, putting everything in discussion”, Gjiknuri declared.
For Gjiknuri, the document that the CEC Chairwoman sent to the Parliament, asking them to take over the distribution of parliamentary seats according to districts, has only one explanation, which is a concern also shared by the international community.
“It’s proving once again that the CEC is completely politicized”, Gjiknuri declared.
The Socialists, different from the DP, think that the Parliament cannot distribute the mandates since this competency belongs to the CEC by law.
“The legal deadline has not expired. The deadline is March 7th”, Gjiknuri declared.
Gjiknuri wishes that the Parliament will not undertake such an anti-constitutional act, or the opposition will address even the Constitutional Court to stop a process that doesn’t guarantee equality.
