SP: Basha’s tax reduction, a fraud

One day after the Tirana Mayor’s speech for removing 60 municipal taxes,
the Socialists of the Municipal Council considered it a deceit, since the
Tirana citizens pay only one tax that has not been reduced.

They say that the only free services that the citizens will be receiving from the Municipality are free visits at the Tirana Zoo, free planting of some trees and other services that were not a fiscal burden for the citizens.

The Socialist Councilor, Gent Gazheli, declared that they support the tax reduction for the citizens and small businesses, but they cannot support the political bluff of the new Mayor. He adds that the Tirana citizens pay only one tax, which has remained the same, and that we shouldn’t confuse the taxes with the fees. Gazheli says that Tirana citizens today pay only the Green Tax and the Advertisement fee, which have been reduced in 2009 after a Parliament decision. The only fees that will be removed are those of the Zoo, the tennis courts and the Tirana Cultural Center, which do not directly affect the Tirana citizens.

“The Mayor cannot make fun of the public by removing the tax for the international export of wool, when 18.000 small businesses in Albania are suffering the economic crisis as never before”, Gazheli declared.

Although the Democratic Party Councilors passed the package of fee reduction, the Socialist legal expert, Eridian Salianji, says that these decisions are invalid, since they do not have the votes of the majority.

“All decisions that were voted today, passed with 27 valid votes and two invalid votes, because two of the members have not a legal mandate. The law demands that one decision should be passed with at least 28 votes”, Salianji declared.

According to Salianji, the Tirana Prefect should return these decisions for a review at the Council. If the mandates of the two councilors will not be made legal, the Socialists will send the case to court.
