The Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, attended a visit in Baku,
Azerbaijan, where started the construction works for the “southern gas
corridor”, part of which is the “Trans-Adriatic” pipeline.
The project starts with the “Shah Deniz” fields, where the natural gas comes from, and is then transported through the Tanap pipeline that goes to Greece through Turkey.
Here it will be connected with the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline, to be distributed then from Italy to European countries. In the current geo-political conditions of Eastern Europe, this project reduces the dependency of the EU and Eastern European countries on the Russian gas.
Present in the ceremony for the 20th anniversary of what is know the “agreement of the century” were the Presidents of Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, the Prime Ministers of Georgia, Greece, Montenegro; the Ministers of Energy from Turkey, Britain and Italy, and the special envoy and coordinator for international energy matters at the US State Department, Amos Hochstein.
Each of the officials representing the participating countries has symbolically signed the first pipe of the Southern Gas Corridor.
By underlining that Albania has fulfilled all contractual obligations for guaranteeing a quick start for the construction of TAP, Minister Gjiknuri declared that this project is a source of development not only for Albania, but also for Kosovo, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Southeastern Europe.
The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the gas systems with the most multi-dimensional values ever built in the world. Its length goes to 4000 kilometers through seven countries, including many energy companies. The Corridor is made of some special energy projects that represent a general investment of 45 billion USD.
