Softer motorboat moratorium

The Albanian Parliament is expected to soften the motorboat moratorium
by allowing in the Albanian waters only the yachts and sailing ships.
The initiative was taken by the majority, which had just rejected a
legal initiative of the opposition to remove the moratorium, with the
argument that it was blocking tourism.

“Considering the fact that the amends of the MPs favor the initiative taken by the Socialist MPs, we decided to initially pass the amends in the Commission of laws, as we have decided even before with the Socialist Party’s request, before we send it to a Parliament session. The goal was entirely positive, but it seems that the Socialist Party is used to object everything that we do, even when it is for their good”, declared the Democratic MP, Edi Paloka.

After opposing the abolition of the moratorium for seven months, the majority softened their views on the matter. The Democratic MP, Osman Metalla, declared for Top Channel that the amends include removing the moratorium only for sailing vessels and yachts.

The propositions of the Socialist Parliamentary Group and a draft-law proposed by MP Artan Gaci were systematically and harshly attacked by the majority, arguing that the abolition of the moratorium would return the human traffic to Italy through motorboats.

The Socialist MP Artan Gaci greeted this new position of the majority, by declaring that the ones who benefit are the citizens, and not a group of millionaires or yacht owners.

“This is good news for all Albanians. Finally, the government backed off from the absurd and primitive resistance to the SP requests. After delaying it for many months, they are taking in consideration of all Socialist MPs, local leaders and the residents of coastal lines. The essence of our request for this amends was not for the millionaires and their yachts. Although they accused us of playing with populism, the essence was to unblock all tourist vehicles for the common citizens of our country”, Gaci declared.

A few days earlier, the Mayors of the left wing in tourist areas signed a petition for removing the moratorium that has been considered as very dangerous for tourism. The Italian ambassador, Massimo Gaiani, considered the moratorium as an extreme measure which he hoped will never be necessary again.
