One day after the Parliament passed the Civil Code amends with the
consensus of the opposition, the Socialist Party announced the
propositions for the Penal Code amends.
First of all, the Socialists demand harsher punishments for some existing penal acts related with the elections.
They also propose amends for the implementation of the penal code towards the Ministers, arguing that the penal responsibility of the Ministers for their actions while on duty is provided in the legislation of other countries too.
The Socialists propose a new penal act for the falsification of official statistics. According to the Socialists, this will encourage the responsibility for preparing and publishing the statistical data. Recently, the Socialists proposed the criminalization of domestic violence.
“I believe that we all agree on the principle of how we have influenced in the Albanian society”, declared MP Ermonela Felaj.
Mrs. Felaj was the rapporteur for the Penal Code. She presented the Socialist stance against the decriminalization of slander by journalists.
While the entire expected that this bipartisan initiative, born 7 years ago, could finally be successfully excluded from the Penal Code and included only in the Civil Code, the Socialists proposed that slander should remain in the Penal Code, but rather than imprisonment, as it currently is, it should be sentenced only with a fine.
This and other propositions for the Penal Code will be submitted by the Socialists at the Commission of Laws this Monday.
