Albanian women on the International Women’s Day, March 8th.
Rama started his message saying that this March 8th is the day to reflect about how much more the Albanian women still need to have equal rights as their sisters in the free world.
“So that the Albanian women do not get discriminated and left behind, so that they do not submit to domestic violence and unemployment, which is higher for the women than men; so that they do not fall victim of prejudices or the isolating behavior. So that the Albanian women do not feel the lack – not for their fault – of the irreplaceable roleb that nature and freedom has set for the current social balance in the country”, Rama declared.
The opposition leader concluded his speech by saying that if we enable women to play this role, there is no doubt that Albania will be politically and economically stronger.
FRESSH protests in front of Prime Minister’s Office
The young members of the Euro Socialist Youth Forum (FRESSH) preferred to commemorate March 8th not as a celebration day, but a day of protests. The asked the Prime Minister that rather than organizing evenings for businessmen to gather funds for the organization of his wife, he should gather funds for a more advanced health system, since, according to FRESSH, the mortality rates of women during childbirth are the highest in the region.
Berisha: Women’s contribution, incomparable
With the symbolic of the traditional women vests from all over the Albanian lands, the democratic women have celebrated in Tirana the international Women’s Day that this year coincides with the 100th year of Albanian anniversary.
But the celebration left space for reflections about the role of women in the Albanian society. According to the Parliament Speaker, Jozefina Topalli, the Albanian woman has been able to confront all difficulties and break the historic barriers for not accepting the status of submission.
However, the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, who received a full enthusiasm from the Democratic Women, as for showing that the “better half – as he called them – cannot do much without men”.
“I don’t want to refer to statistics, because the best statistics in the world cannot be evaluated with your incomparable contribution”, Berisha declared.
Being part of a society where there are often shocking news of domestic violence, Prime Minister Berisha had a strong message for the women.
“Let us demolish the patriarchal wall, the violators of their rights. Don’t wait for someone to give this to you. You must engage in a historical battle to achieve it”, Berisha declared.
Sequi: In Albania, women had right to vote earlier than in West
On the International Women’s Day, the Ambassador of the EU to Tirana, Ettore Sequi, valued the role of women in the Albanian society, mentioning the respecting of their rights as one of the EU priorities.
Mr. Sequi decided to start this day with a group of journalists, mentioning not only the difficulty of the women journalists, but also the professional responsibility that they have for treating several issues that are related with the women’s role in Albania.
“Pushing forward the women’s rights is one of the main EU valued. I know about your difficult work, and as journalists, your situation affects the reality of women very closely. I have given an interview some time ago, in which I said that being a woman in Albania is difficult, but being a journalist in Albania is even more difficult. I would like to quote some data from the global reports in 2011 about the media women, acording to which, 26% of them are in government posts and only 17% in leading posts. You are very important, because you are showing the reality and you are representing them”, Sequi declared.
Mr. Sequi reminded that Albania has respected the women’s right to vote since 1920. Historical data show that women in Albania have voted 25 years before women in France and Switzerland, and 26 years earlier than some other Western Europe countries.
UN, the message of governments for gender equality
On the International Day of Women, the United Nations have given their message for the governments.
A message of the UN general secretary, Ban Ki Moon, says that even countries with the best statistics still have inequality in the payment differences between men and women, for the same job, and there is a lower representation of women in politics and decision making.
“I encourage the governments, the civil society and the private sector to get engaged for the gender quality and giving more power to women, as a basic human right and strength for everyone’s good. The energy, talent and strength of women and girls represent the most valuable natural resource and the most unexploited one of the human nature”, concludes the message of the UN General Secretary.
