Although cigarette packets warn the consumers that smoking kills, it
seems that they do not read the signs. The World Health Organization
published the number of deaths caused by smoking.
Referring to 2009 statistics, according to INSTAT, 14,888 persons die each year in Albania, and almost 3000 of these deaths are caused by smoke. The coordinator of the smoking projects in the Public Health Institution, Roland Shuperka, explained the mortality rates of people who have died by cancer and heart diseases caused by smoke.
According to the studies, there are 950,000 smokers in Albania, 680,000 of them are males and 220,000 are females. The Albanians spend 550 million dollars each year on cigarettes. The implementation of the law that was approved two years ago for prohibiting smoking in public has completely failed.
