Smog in Elbasan

The city of Elbasan wakes up every day in a cloud of smoke. You can’t see anything from a distance, because of its density.

Elbasan has inherited a catastrophic pollution from the past of the Metallurgic Plant, which is still present today. Most affected from this situation is the neighbourhood near the former Metallurgic plant, especially during the night. Many citizens of this area are unable to open the windows for cool air, because everything is smoke.

The figures that monitor the situation give normal levels, within the EU norms, not only for the city but also for the industrial area. But the Director of Environment, Adi Madhi, accepts that the problems are existent.

The Mayor not only considers the public data as fake, but he says that if this situation will not find an urgent solution, they will demand the citizens’ help.

“This is an acute problem for the entire city. The cancer diseases are shocking and this has nothing to do with the bad food, but with the air quality”, Mayor Qazim Sejdini declared.

Elbasan has a major problem with the waste field too, which burns tons of waste materials each day.
