Silence and concern about maritime border agreement with Greece

The Albanian government chose to stay silent about the negotiations with Greece. The little information we know came from the Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Kotzias, but these are essential details for Albanians.

Greece claims that Albania agreed to give away 12 miles of maritime territory and that the Cham case has not been negotiated. With this little information, it is still difficult to judge the final product of these long and complicated negotiations, as long as there is no official information.

The declaration of Mr.Tsipras raises a serious question: Did Edi Rama’s government accept the same thing that was negotiated by the government of Sali Berisha, but in other terms?

If the agreement is different than that of Berisha, for which the Socialists accused the Democratic Party of selling Albania’s national interests, then why there are no details from Rama and Bushati?

The Albanian government could have reached the best possible agreement, as the country is knocking on the European Union doors, for which the vote of Greece could be decisive.

But if the Albanian government gives no details, the public and political factors are right to be concerned. It is not the first time that the Greek Foreign Minister speaks before his Albanian counterpart in interviews with Greek journalists, answering to his public opinion.

The Albanian government, on the other hand, is not comfortable to talk about the cemetery of Greek soldiers, the maritime border and the Cham case. Could it be that Albania has ceded more than it has benefited? Could it be that Albania’s biggest achievement is the Greek vote for the candidate status?

Could it be the same situation as in 2009, when Greece voted in favour of Albania’s NATO accession, after signing the first maritime agreement? We cannot know this as long as the government stays silent not only with the media but also through the exclusive information channel, ERTV (Edi Rama TV).
