The Shkumbin River in Elbasan is almost as polluted as Lana River in
Tirana. Experts do not recommend contact with the waters of these
rivers, due to the high level of pollution and bacteria.
The Specialists of Public Health in Elbasan appeal the citizens to avoid bathing in the waters of Shkumbin River. This river, once known for the purity, today has a high level of pollution due to the sewage waters that pour from towns like Prrenjas, Librazhd, Peqin and the city of Elbasan; and also by the great quantity of urban wasted that are dumped inside the river.
We have started to inspect the waters of Shkumbin and the delta of Devoll. The Shkumbin River is mostly polluted below the area of Elbasan”, declared Bujar Kllogjeri, director of the Public Health in this city.
The city of Elbasan continues to be a main factor in the pollution of this river, due to the waste management field that has been burning garbage for decades near the river, and the chemical residues of the Metalurgy, the steel plants of which are set beside the river, which bring negative consequences to the fauna and flora.
