Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future 2400 people who have been arrested for thefts or frauds have had their sentences converted from prison to community services.
Most of them are young people sentenced over different types of thefts.
“I am in probation and I must not be accompanied with former convicts, and I must not commit any kind of penal act for 18 months”, says one of the dozens people young men who have had their sentences converted. Other rules that they have to obey to is not leaving house after 22:00 and not traveling abroad.
The 40-year-old Nuri Shahini was found guilty for building an illegal construction, and his sentence was converted to 18 months of probation.
The Probation Service Director, Avdyl Spahiu, declares that among these people there are senior citizens who have falsified documents for increasing the pension age or for making illegal power connections to their houses.
“When the court rules for one of the alternatives of the sentence, the decision goes to the Tirana Prosecution and they bring us the execution order. After receiving the order, the Local Service Office starts supervising the convicts”, Spahiu declared.
According to Spahiu, the minors on Probation will be obliged to follow professional courses or engage in community services.
“We have a case who was sentenced to six months in prison and that is now converted to 18 months on probation. He will not be allowed to go near a power cabin, for at least 30 meters away”, Spahiu declared.
According to the law, all people who are on probation are not allowed to leave the country before ending the community service.
