22 years after the collapse of communism, the status of Ahmet Zogu was
placed in the Albanian capital, one of the most controversial
personalities even today.
Prime Minister Berisha and Ahmet Zogu’s nephew, Leka Zogu, revealed the statue on December 24th, the day when Ahmet Zogu overthrew through force the democratic government of Fan Noli.
Prime Minister Berisha declared that Ahmet Zogu was a personality that not only supported the consolidation of Albania’s independence, but also stopped its further division together with other Albanians at the Lushnje Congress.
Berisha didn’t hesitate to discuss the controversial moment when the self-proclaimed king Zog left Albania one day before the fascist invasion. Berisha declared that it was not treason, but refusing the fascist regime, against which King Zog acted in exile.
For Berisha, history will not judge Ahmet Zogu for his mistake, but his acts that helped the construction of the modern Albanian state.
