Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future
The Lekel village school in Tepelena has only two students. The teacher
with 40 years of experience on his shoulders has to travel each day from
Gjirokaster, with whatever vehicle that accepts to drive him near the
village, and then he has to walk for 40 minutes on foot to the school.
While showing the crumbled part of the school, teacher Polo Puleri says that it has seen better days, but the reduced number of students has also reduced the interest of the authorities for the school.
The only students are Renato and Kristina, who different to their peers, they cannot organize activities, cannot play in groups and when there is rain or snow, they don’t even go at school.
The fact that this school has only two students has made it be forgotten by everyone. The walls are covered by humidity and the lack of electricity are details that seem to not affect the children at all.
There are more than 20 schools in Tepelena where children study in very bad conditions.
