The Roma families have been staying at the Ombudsman premises for more than 7 days.

While the temperatures go under zero, they express their satisfaction on one side for staying in a warm place where there is also food, but they demand a final shelter, since they cannot stay in a place where there is no warm water.

The Ministry of Labor has offered the premises of a military base, which will be rehabilitated for them.

The sheltering of the eight Roma families has had the attention of the international community, since it is one of the 12 criteria of Albania for the EU. The General Director for Integration at the European Commission, Stefano Sannino, accompanied by the EU Ambassador, Ettore Sequi, have visited the Ombudsman, Igli Totozani.

Sannino and Sequi guaranteed Totozani for their support in the initiative for sheltering the Roma families.

Tirana Municipality is silent

One week after the eight Roma families were sheltered at the Ombudsman premises, with some of their children having health problems, the Minsitry of Labor offered the premises of a military base, which is currently being rehabilitated for sheltering the families, and they say that this is the only alternative, because the sheltering issue is not their competence.

But organizations such as “Amnesty International” have criticized temporary shelters, and asked the for a fast and final solution of this problem.
